Outboard Dory 16

Designed by Jacques Mertens

A 16 ft 6 in planing power dory by Jacques Mertens, sold by Bateau / Boat Builder Central as the OD16. A flat bottom with a distinctive slanted chine keeps it dry, softens pounding and lets it bank in turns. The cockpit is self-bailing, beam is 7 ft, hull weight about 500 lb, and power is up to 25 hp with a tiller or 40 hp with remote steering.

Epoxy-plywood composite built upright on the flat sole with no jig and no scarfing. The designer says a first-time builder can do it; the OD18 notes record that the OD16 prototype hull took a novice under 100 hours. Budget 200 to 350 complete.
