Outboard Dory 18
Designed by Jacques Mertens
An 18 ft planing power dory by Jacques Mertens, sold by Bateau / Boat Builder Central as the OD18. It is the original length of the hull that was shortened to make the OD16, with the same 7 ft beam, freeboard and slanted chine. Hull weight is about 610 lb, draft 5 in, and 40 hp is recommended with 70 the maximum. Centre console and dual console layouts are drawn, and it is the hull under the Harbor Master 19.
Epoxy-plywood composite built upright on its flat sole with no jig, from 1/4 in sides cut flat to dimensions. The designer says a first-timer with hand tools can build the hull in under 80 hours. Budget 200 to 350 complete. Real hours from logged builds are below.
