18 ft Texas Skiff
Designed by Jay R. Benford
An 18 ft design from Jay Benford's catalog, drawn for plywood bottom with batten seam topsides construction. An outboard-powered skiff, the only engine-driven boat among the small craft designs and the largest of them. One of the fifteen designs in Small Craft Plans, the book that carries complete working drawings and tables of offsets so a builder can work straight from its pages rather than ordering plans. The designer still recommends lofting full size and taking the rest of the dimensions off the lofting, on the grounds that the time spent is paid back several times over during the build.
Benford publishes a displacement of 500 lb in coastal cruising trim, which is tanks full with the crew and their stores aboard rather than a shipping weight. Plans are sold to owner-builders; professional builders are directed to a licensing agreement instead.
What building a 18 ft Texas Skiff actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
