Trawler 28

Designed by Jacques Mertens

A 28 ft 2 in displacement trawler yacht by Jacques Mertens for Bateau, an offshore boat with a straight-shaft diesel. The hull is beamy at 10 ft, draws 34 in and displaces 7,500 lb light and 9,750 lb loaded. With a 35 to 50 hp diesel it runs at about 7 knots, and the designer calculates a range of around 1,000 miles. Since 2007 the plans include foam sandwich scantlings as an alternative to plywood composite.

The hull is stitch and glue composite built upside down on a jig. The designer says no special tools are needed. Designer's figures: about 200 hours for the hull, 500 hours work-boat style and 1,000 for a show finish. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
