Flateka no. 12
Designed by Bertil Andersson
The flateka is the plain flat-bottomed skiff of Swedish lakes and shallow shores, and Andersson is candid that it had low status precisely because it was so easy to build; some boatbuilders refused the work and left it to joiners. This one was built in 1980 by Edgar Sundén at Kristianopel in Blekinge, with an oak stem and a spruce bottom and sides.
She is 4.31 m by 1.42 m and drawn on a single 1:10 construction sheet, measured in May 1980. A full-size version is also available, with patterns for keel, stems, transom and frames plus building moulds with the planking marked, and the site describes her as one of the simplest boats in the collection and a good choice for a beginner. Like most flatekor she has a small keel to help her track under oars, and a small outboard is the usual modern alternative.
What building a Flateka no. 12 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
