Drifter
Designed by Glen-L Marine
The Drifter is Glen-L Marine's plywood McKenzie driftboat, on one set of plans in 14, 16 and 18 ft sizes. The high prow and pronounced rocker are what make the type so quick to answer the oars in fast water, and the design carries watertight compartments fore and aft for gear. A small transom outboard is allowed, with the usual warning not to overpower a hull with a low top speed.
Drawn to be built cheaply and fast by a beginner: no special timber, no tricky methods, full-size patterns and no lofting. Plan on about 150 to 300 hours depending on the size. Glen-L sells fiberglass kits for all three lengths. Measured medians from build logs are below.
What building a Drifter actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
