Lapwing 16

Designed by Graham Byrnes

A 15 ft 8 in daysailer by Graham Byrnes of B&B Yacht Designs that pairs a traditional lapstrake look with modern performance. Beam is 5 ft 6 1/2 in and draft runs from 7 in to 42 in. The hull is glued plywood lapstrake with eight strakes a side, which gives a round-bilged shape, and because there are no frames the interior is left clean. Plans are available, and B&B says a kit is in development.

The strakes are hung over a building jig, so this asks for more patience and woodworking than B&B's stitch and glue boats, and some previous experience will help. Budget 500 to 900 hours as a rule of thumb. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
