Design
12 ft Keelboat
Designed by Jay R. Benford
A 12 ft design from Jay Benford's catalog. The oddity of the small craft group. Drawn for ferro-cement in the early 1970s, when that was a normal thing to do, and carrying a 125 square foot sloop rig, or a 344 square foot sandbagger rig drawn by Peter Dunsford for anyone who finds the first one tame. The designer now suggests building her cold-moulded in wood rather than in welded mesh and cement. One of the fifteen designs in Small Craft Plans, the book that carries complete working drawings and tables of offsets so a builder can work straight from its pages rather than ordering plans. The designer still recommends lofting full size and taking the rest of the dimensions off the lofting, on the grounds that the time spent is paid back several times over during the build.
Benford publishes an estimated structural weight of 300 lb. Plans are sold to owner-builders; professional builders are directed to a licensing agreement instead.

Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
