35 ft Packet/Coaster or Tramp
Designed by Jay R. Benford
A 35 ft design from Jay Benford's catalog, drawn for plywood or steel chine construction, so the same hull can be built in whichever suits the shop. The smallest of the coaster hulls, drawn as a packet, a coaster or a tramp. A 35 ft Coaster, WaterLilly, took the People's Choice award at the Solomons TrawlerFest in October 2005. The Coasters were drawn for the Florida Bay Coaster Company and licensed to them; with that company closed the plans are sold directly to anyone who wants one built. They are freighter yachts: ship-shaped, shoal-draft liveaboards with house-sized accommodation, meant to be lived aboard rather than raced or day-sailed.
Benford publishes a displacement of 40,400/54,000 lb in coastal cruising trim, which is tanks full with the crew and their stores aboard rather than a shipping weight. Plans are sold to owner-builders, and study plans are sold separately for anyone wanting to look before committing.
What building a 35 ft Packet/Coaster or Tramp actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
