Montana Guide Boat

Designed by Paul Butler

Based on an old market hunter's boat for river bottoms and sheltered lakes, the Montana Guide Boat is a light double ender of 11 ft 6 in that weighs under 60 lb. Butler pitches it for fishing, waterfowling and general knocking about. It can be rowed with short oars, paddled, poled, or pushed by a trolling motor on a side mount, and some builders cut one end off for a transom.

There is room for two to sit or one adult to recline, and it floats in about 4 in of water with a 250 lb load. The low profile is easy to hide in reeds, and the graphite and epoxy bottom lets one person drag it on a tether over ramps and rocks. The plans are a 39 page booklet of text, drawings and photos.
