Greenland Night Heron
Designed by Nick Schade
An 18 ft strip-planked sea kayak by Nick Schade of Guillemot Kayaks, sold as plans and kits by Chesapeake Light Craft. It uses the standard Night Heron hull, 20 in wide, but the aft deck is lowered to make layback rolls easier and the cockpit is shortened to 20 by 16 in so the paddler can brace anywhere under the foredeck. Hull weight is listed at 39 lb with a 290 lb maximum payload.
CLC rates this an advanced project and estimates 180 hours, a figure that assumes previous boatbuilding experience. The low deck and small ocean cockpit leave little margin in the stripping and coaming work. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a Greenland Night Heron actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
