High-Capacity Great Auk
Designed by Nick Schade
An 18 ft strip-planked expedition kayak from the Guillemot Kayaks range of Nick Schade, sold as plans and kits by Chesapeake Light Craft. At 30 in wide it is built around heavy loads: CLC says it suits a total capacity above 350 lb and still performs with more than 600 lb aboard. Hull weight is 54 lb, the cockpit is 32 by 23 in, and it is stable enough to carry a small sail. The listed paddler range is 300 to 400 lb.
CLC grades it intermediate and estimates 180 hours, a figure that assumes the builder already has some epoxy and fiberglass experience. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a High-Capacity Great Auk actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
