Night Heron
Designed by Nick Schade
An 18 ft strip-planked sea kayak by Nick Schade, sold as plans and kits by Chesapeake Light Craft. It grew out of his Guillemot line, with hull shaping influenced by Greenland Inuit kayaks: volume pushed toward the ends for efficiency at speed, fairly hard chines, and a low aft deck for lay-back rolls. It is 20 in wide, about 40 lb, with a 300 lb maximum payload, and CLC describes it as fast, easy to roll and secure in rough water. An example is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
CLC grades it intermediate and estimates 150 hours. A High Deck version and a Greenland version share the hull. The medians below come from builders who logged this boat here.
What building a Night Heron actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
