Aleutesque
Designed by Nick Schade
An 18 ft strip-planked sea kayak by Nick Schade, sold through Chesapeake Light Craft. It began as a heavy reworking of an Aleut baidarka recorded by David Zimmerly, with the split bow merged into one piece and a small transom stern. Just 20 in wide and about 43 lb, it is a low-volume, fast surfing boat for paddlers of 140 to 210 lb, with a tight fit and a fixed skeg. Kits and full-size plans are available.
CLC rates it advanced and expects builders to read traditional plans and own a tablesaw and bandsaw. CLC's estimate is 250 hours. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a Aleutesque actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
