Guillemot
Designed by Nick Schade
A 17 ft strip-planked sea kayak, the boat Nick Schade named his design firm after, sold as plans and kits by Chesapeake Light Craft. Schade went through seven iterations to get an all-rounder with quick acceleration and easy manoeuvring. It has a shallow-V bottom, a moderately hard chine, volume carried into the ends and a low deck that stays out of cross winds. Beam is 21 in, hull weight 41 lb and maximum payload 300 lb. The design first appeared in Sea Kayaker magazine and in Schade's book The Strip-Built Sea Kayak.
CLC grades it intermediate and estimates 150 hours, noting that some woodworking, epoxy and fiberglass experience helps. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Guillemot actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
