Madness 31-foot Pacific Proa

Designed by John C. Harris

A 30 ft 8 in Pacific proa for fast coastal cruising, designed by John C. Harris of Chesapeake Light Craft in consultation with proa specialist Russell Brown. One long hull carries the rig and berths, and a 22 ft 5 in outrigger is always kept to windward, so the boat shunts end for end instead of tacking. Overall beam is 20 ft, sail area 364 sq ft, and it weighs about 1,400 lb rigged with a payload near 950 lb. It unbolts for trailering.

The hulls are 6 mm okoume, stitched and glued and glassed both sides. CLC sells plans and a CNC-cut plywood kit as a Pro-Kit for experienced wood-epoxy builders, and estimates 1,600 hours depending on finish. Hours logged by builders here are shown below.
