Mystic River Canoe
Designed by Nick Schade
A 17 ft 2 in strip-planked tandem canoe by Nick Schade, sold as plans and kits by Chesapeake Light Craft. Schade drew it for easy evening paddles with his wife around Groton and Mystic, Connecticut, with recurved stems and tumblehome in the classic manner. A fine entry and long waterline make it a quick, light tourer for protected water. Beam is 34 in, hull weight about 42 lb and maximum payload 450 lb.
CLC grades it intermediate and estimates 200 hours, and presents it as a good first strip-built boat, since an open canoe has no deck or coaming and its gentle curves strip quickly over the molds. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
