Night Heron - High Deck
Designed by Nick Schade
An 18 ft strip-planked sea kayak by Nick Schade, sold as plans and kits by Chesapeake Light Craft. Below the sheer it is identical to the standard Night Heron, a 20 in wide, hard-chined hull influenced by Greenland kayaks and represented in the Museum of Modern Art collection. The deck is raised for more leg room and stowage, giving a 12 in knee height and room for a men's size 13 shoe, so taller paddlers get the same performance. Hull weight is listed at 40 lb and maximum payload at 300 lb.
CLC grades it intermediate and estimates 150 hours, the same as the standard boat. Hours recorded by builders of this design are shown below.
