Peace Canoe
Designed by John C. Harris
An 18 ft open plywood canoe by John C. Harris of Chesapeake Light Craft, created for family boatbuilding events and team-building sessions. It began as the War Canoe, was built in numbers at Harvard Business School, and was renamed when WoodenBoat chose it for its Family Boatbuilding event. Beam is 44 in, weight about 100 lb, and it carries more than 600 lb. Plans and kits are sold, and plans builders can use ordinary exterior plywood.
No epoxy is needed. Puzzle-jointed panels go onto stems, chine logs and sheer clamps with polyurethane adhesive and bronze ring nails. CLC says a kit assembles in a weekend, rates it a beginner project and estimates 40 hours. Hours recorded by builders of this design are shown below.
