Petrel Play
Designed by Nick Schade
A 14 ft strip-planked kayak by Nick Schade, sold as plans and kits by Chesapeake Light Craft. It sits between a recreational kayak and a sea kayak: steady and roomy enough for novices on sheltered water, yet responsive and seaworthy enough for surf, open water and tide races. The flattish V bottom has a chine that is rounded forward and hard aft, with a full bow and plenty of rocker. Beam is 23 in, hull weight 31 lb and maximum payload 260 lb. It followed Schade's earlier stitch-and-glue Petrel Play SG.
