Petrel Sport SG

Designed by Nick Schade

A 16 ft stitch-and-glue sea kayak by Nick Schade, sold by Chesapeake Light Craft as a CNC-cut kit or full-size plans. It is a plywood take on his strip-planked Petrel: 21 in beam, about 41 lb, plumb ends for a long waterline, plenty of rocker, and a chine that runs double forward and single aft for edged turns. A roomy cockpit and a 300 lb payload make it a candidate for multi-day trips. Flush wooden or rubber hatches can be fitted.

CLC lists it as an intermediate project, best with some epoxy and fiberglass work behind you, and estimates 100 hours. Budget 100 to 140 hours if this is a first kayak. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
