16' Chestnut Kruger
Designed by Chestnut Canoe Co. (lines taken by Roger MacGregor)
A 16 ft cedar-strip version of the Chestnut Kruger, a slim cruising canoe from the Chestnut Canoe Co. whose lines were taken by Roger MacGregor, author of When the Chestnut Was in Flower. Newfound Woodworks launched its version in 2003. About 55 lb, 33.5 in beam, 450 lb capacity, 1.5 in of rocker. It works tandem, or solo from the bow seat facing aft.
A conventional open-canoe strip build with ash gunwales, caned seats and decks, suitable for a first project. Kit forms are CNC-cut with grooves for stapleless clamping. As a rule of thumb, budget 150 to 250 hours. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a 16' Chestnut Kruger actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
