Columbia Star
Designed by Ray Klebba
Where the Polar Star and Shell Star are built for open water, the Columbia Star is the easygoing member of Ray Klebba's sea kayak line. She is 16 ft long and 25 in wide, with a shallow arch hull and a moderate V bow that give her real initial stability, and a plumb stern, borrowed from modern canoes, that stretches the waterline. Rocker is about 1 1/2 in at the bow and 1 in at the stern, and the listed weight is 42 pounds.
Klebba aims her at beginners and at paddlers who spend their time in salt marshes, back bays and rivers, photographing, birdwatching or fishing, while claiming enough open water tracking to satisfy more experienced hands. The cockpit is a roomy 34 by 17 in so knees can be raised, there is enclosed storage fore and aft, and a rudder can be added though he doubts most owners will want one. Plans, a basic kit and a full kit are offered.
What building a Columbia Star actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
