Shearwater 14 Hybrid

Designed by Eric Schade

A 14 ft 6 in sea kayak from Chesapeake Light Craft's Shearwater family, the West Greenland-style hulls Eric Schade drew for CLC, here with a cedar-strip deck over the stitch-and-glue plywood hull. It is the smallest of the line, 23 in wide and about 39 lb, sized for paddlers of 100 to 150 lb with a 200 lb payload. The hull itself acts as the strongback for the deck, which is stripped over temporary molds. Kits and plans are sold.

CLC rates the hybrid intermediate, a step up from the all-plywood boat because of the strip work, and estimates 120 hours; its own Shearwater 16 Hybrid display model took about 100. Budget 110 to 160. Real hours from logged builds are below.
