Shearwater Sport

Designed by Eric Schade

A 14 ft 6 in stitch-and-glue kayak by Eric Schade for Chesapeake Light Craft, placed between the fast Shearwaters and the roomy Wood Ducks. At 25 in beam and about 42 lb, it has a 34 in cockpit, knee and hip braces, a low aft deck for rolling, bulkheads and flush hatches, and carries 300 lb, enough for a 220 lb paddler with camping gear. The page says many are built for surfing. Kits and full-size plans are sold, and a sectional version exists.

Rated beginner by CLC, with the shorter length easing building and storage. CLC's estimate is 80 hours; budget 80 to 120 for a first boat. Real hours from logged builds are below.
