Shearwater Sport Hybrid

Designed by Eric Schade

A 14 ft 6 in kayak that puts a cedar-strip deck on the stitch-and-glue plywood hull of Eric Schade's Shearwater Sport for Chesapeake Light Craft. Beam is 25 in, weight about 48 lb, and the 34 in cockpit and 300 lb payload suit paddlers from 100 to 240 lb. Builders receive a mix of light and dark cedar strips and can follow the manual's deck pattern or invent their own. Sold as a complete kit or as plans with manual.

CLC describes it as somewhat more challenging than the plywood Sport and rates it intermediate, estimating 120 hours. Budget 110 to 160 depending on how elaborate the deck pattern is. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
