Whitby Pilot Gig
Designed by Chesapeake Light Craft
A 32 ft six-oared Cornish pilot gig rendered in plywood by Chesapeake Light Craft for the Whitby Fisherman's Amateur Rowing Club in North Yorkshire. The lines start from the gig Treffry of 1838, adapted to CLC's LapStitch stitch-and-glue lapstrake method with ten structural bulkheads and only a few cradles instead of a mold. Beam is 58 in, dry hull weight 725 lb, payload 1,600 lb, and the club reported 10 knots. It rows with 12 ft 6 in sweeps and is sold as a complete or wood-only kit.
Hull assembly from the kit can take as little as three days, but CLC classes it a Pro Kit and estimates 400 hours. For a club crew, budget 400 to 600. Real hours from logged builds are below.
