Vision Wood Single Sculls

The Vision Wood single sculls are strip planked racing shells by Dudley Dix, developed from the carbon Vision shells he drew for Slade Rowing over 20 years ago. Plans cover five sizes by rower weight, from the Light Single at 25 ft 4 in (7.725 m) long and 277 mm hull beam up to the Ultra-Heavy at 28 ft 4 in. Builders in Australia plank theirs in light paulownia and are nearing minimum legal weight.
The hull is stripped over temporary moulds set on a bed, glassed inside and out, then stiffened with carbon or thin plywood frames, with okoume plywood cockpit and saxboards. The designer asks for competent woodworker skills. Budget 200 to 350 hours as a rule of thumb. Real hours from logged builds are below.
