A 40 ft ocean-going motorsailer by Sam Devlin, drawn for two biologists from British Columbia who plan several years of research travel around the world. The design splits the work evenly between a gaff rig and a John Deere diesel, with a fantail stern. The engine is for fjords and fickle winds, and the sails are there to stretch range and cut fuel bills over long ocean legs.
The study plan package holds four drawings and Devlin's article on how the design came about; construction plans are not listed. A 40 ft offshore motorsailer is a major project for an experienced builder. As a rough rule of thumb, allow 8,000 hours or more. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
