Electric Philosophy 40
Designed by Sam Devlin
A 40 ft all-electric, solar-powered cruising home on a catamaran base, designed by Sam Devlin with owners Ed and Eileen Pauley and built at the Devlin yard. The Devlin site says the first boat covered 1,500 miles in Pacific Northwest waters without plugging in, and has since been to Alaska and back on her roof panels alone. She featured in an Off Center Harbor film and in Soundings in 2024.
Only study plans are sold and no detailed dimensions are published. Two hulls, a house and a custom electric drive make this a project for an experienced builder with electrical skills. As a rough rule of thumb, allow 8,000 hours or more. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
