Oarling II 17
Designed by Sam Devlin
A 17 ft 4 in dory-type pulling boat from Sam Devlin, built stitch and glue in plywood and light enough to car-top, with the specifications quoting 85 lb dry. The flared dory sections pick up displacement quickly, so it rows well with passengers or cargo, and it is longer and faster than a Gloucester Gull type. Folding oarlocks, 8 ft spoon oars and a flotation seat compartment are part of the design, and it has made respectable showings in Northwest rowing regattas. A CNC cut kit is sold as well as plans.
A narrow, simple hull with little interior makes this a realistic first boat, especially from the kit. Budget 80 to 140 hours as a rule of thumb. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a Oarling II 17 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
