Duck Trap Wherry

A 16 ft lapstrake pulling boat drawn by Walt Simmons in 1980 as a lightened relative of his Newfoundland Trap Skiff. Duck Trap Woodworking has built her from 13 to 18 ft using the same offsets, and several sail rigs were added after launch. The first was cedar on an oak backbone with steamed ribs; a glued lapstrake hull in 6 mm okoume plywood comes in under 100 lb.
Simmons calls her the easiest of his wherries to build, and a photo book shows every plank going on. Small Boats Magazine reports about 120 hours for a basic hull and one owner's 300 hours for a sailing version. Budget 250 to 500 hours for a first lapstrake boat.
