Bee 16
Designed by Richard Woods
A 4.86 m (16 ft) seaworthy rowing boat from Richard Woods of Woods Designs, built stitch and glue from three sheets of 4 mm and three of 6 mm plywood. About 49 kg, it carries four adults, has a vee bow for chop, a built-in daggerboard case and an optional 3.5 sq m downwind rig. The tucked-up transom rules out an outboard. One Bee finished the 21 mile Great River Race on the Thames in under three and a half hours.
Woods describes it as very easy to build, and its near sister Linnet has been a first boat for at least one owner. Light enough to car top when finished. As a rule of thumb budget 80 to 150 hours. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Bee 16 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
