Dix 470
Designed by Dudley Dix
A 14.24 m (46 ft 9 in) cruising catamaran by Dudley Dix in radius chine plywood and epoxy, a smaller sister to the DH550. Dix says the DH550 project showed the method works even better for catamaran hulls than for monohulls, giving fair hulls that were quick to build. Overall beam is 7.7 m, displacement 10,600 kg, sail area 1,099 sq ft, with twin 50 hp diesels and draft from 0.75 m to 2.19 m.
Kits are available from Exo Marine. The plywood technique is within amateur reach, but a bridgedeck cat of this size is a long commitment that needs a big shed. Expect 10,000 hours or more as a rule of thumb. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a Dix 470 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
