Hout Bay 40
Designed by Dudley Dix
A 39 ft 7 in (12.09 m) on deck steel family cruiser by Dudley Dix, drawn as a smaller sister to the Hout Bay 50 gaff schooner. The hull is multi-chine steel with a radiused top chine for a round bilge look, or plain multi-chine. It has traditional looks over a long fin keel and skeg rudder, and offers gaff schooner, gaff cutter or Marconi cutter rigs, three layouts, and 1.7 m deep or 1.3 m wing keel draft. Displacement is 11,600 kg.
The gaff rigs use steel tube lower masts, timber spars and wood-shelled blocks, so an amateur can make nearly all of the rig as well as the hull. Welding skill is required. Expect 5,000 to 8,000 hours. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Hout Bay 40 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
