Shearwater 39
Designed by Dudley Dix
A 39 ft 4 in (12.0 m) on deck classic cruising cutter by Dudley Dix, commissioned by Gerfried Nebe of Nebe Boats. It has a clipper bow, short bowsprit, strong sheer and a radiused champagne-glass stern over a modern foil keel with bolted-on lead. It was first built in aluminum, went into fiberglass production in South Africa with more than 20 launched, and is also detailed for cold molded wood. Displacement is 9,800 kg and sail area 842 sq ft.
A home builder would most likely choose the cold molded or aluminum version, either of which calls for an experienced amateur. Material lists for both are on the page. Expect 6,000 to 9,000 hours as a rule of thumb. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
