Design
Rob Roy 14
Designed by Platt Monfort
Monfort's decked boat in this group is an adaptation of a cruising kayak by L. Francis Herreshoff. The hull lines are chosen to carry a fair load of camping gear stowed below deck, so this is a touring boat rather than a play boat, 14 ft long and meant for a single paddler.
It keeps its ultralight weight by using 1/8 in doorskin plywood for the bulkheads and cockpit framing, set up as a box structure that adds a good deal of strength. The designer rates it as more demanding than his open canoes because of the deck, the cockpit and the number of small parts, and suggests the result repays the effort. The rest is the usual Kevlar braced wood frame under shrunk polyester.
What building a Rob Roy 14 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
