Alpha 2
Designed by Glen-L Marine
An 18 ft 6 in sailing dory from Glen-L Marine in the tradition of the New England Beachcomber-Alpha club dories, updated to double-chine plywood with no permanent frames. It sails on a 117 sq ft sloop rig with a centerboard, or sculls and rows, and is meant for beach cruising with a shallow rudder for landing. Glen-L publish a hull depth of 2 ft 6 in.
The bare hull comes out at about 400 lb. They put the usual load at 2 to 4 people. Sail area is Main - 101 sq ft. The hull is a double chine dory, 3/8" (sides), 1/2" (bottom) sheet plywood. Sail type: Sloop rig with centerboard. No engine is drawn for her. They draw a matching trailer for her. Built over a simple temporary form from a little over six sheets of plywood, with full-size patterns and no lofting. Allow 200 to 350 hours. Real build times from logs appear below.
