Sea Midge
Designed by Grandpa's Archive
Sea Midge is an 8 ft pram, 6 ft 6 in on the waterline and 52 in wide at its broadest, described as a three-way boat because she rows, sails or takes an outboard of 1 to 3 hp. The article traces her to the North Sea yacht dinghy and gives her a convex bottom for speed under any of the three. She seats two.
The hull is 1/4 in exterior plywood over a stressed framework, built on a form over two mold frames that come out afterwards; stem and transom backings are 3/8 in plywood framed in oak or fir. The hull weighs 65 lb and the spars 10 lb, which makes car topping easy. The sketch shows a simple sail plan. Free to download as a scanned magazine article.
What building a Sea Midge actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
