Colvos Passage
Designed by Dave Kuperstein
Colvos Passage is named after the 20 mile channel between Vashon Island and the Kitsap Peninsula in Puget Sound, a mile from the home of the tall, big footed friend she was designed for, who wanted an expedition double to take his teenage children camping. She is listed as 19 ft 6 in in the heading and 20 ft overall in the data, with a 29 1/2 in beam, 11 in sides and a maximum displacement of 680 pounds. High volume, strength and stability let her carry a load safely in rough water while keeping drag low for long days.
The keel is ordinary stitch and glue, but the round bilges are made by scoring the plywood partway through, bending it over plastic pipe sections in a home made mould and gluing it with epoxy and tape. Four sheets of 4 mm okoume cover the whole boat. The plans give full size moulds, panel layouts and an illustrated guide, including flush hatches that keep the deck grain continuous.
What building a Colvos Passage actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
