True North XPD
Designed by Steve Killing
The True North XPD is the Endeavour 17 scaled up for big or tall paddlers on extended trips. Ron Frenette and his builders at Canadian Canoes in Mississauga wanted more capacity, and Steve Killing produced this 19 ft 3 in by 25.5 in expedition kayak with an optimum load range of 300 to 460 pounds. The deck is more than an inch higher than the Endeavour's to make room for large feet and for stretching on long days.
A generous 33.5 by 18.5 in keyhole cockpit makes getting in and out easier while still giving knee support for paddling. Bear Mountain expects her to finish at 50 to 60 pounds, heavier than the shorter kayaks but light for a loaded expedition boat. She is built in cedar strip like the rest of the range, and suits a large paddler who has found ordinary touring kayaks cramped and low on volume.
What building a True North XPD actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
