Long Lake
Designed by Dave Kuperstein
Named for the lake on the Kitsap Peninsula where Long Lake Wooden Boats began and where racers train in long narrow boats, this is a 20 ft 2 in plywood day boat that works either as a double kayak for two paddlers or as a single scull with a sliding seat rowing unit. She weighs about 48 pounds as a kayak, light for her length, with a 28 in beam, 8 1/2 in sides and a shallow V, parabolic hull whose midsection resembles an Aleut kayak's. Dave Kuperstein publishes full resistance figures for both setups.
The hull comes from a single 5 by 10 ft sheet of 4 mm okoume, with the deck from two 4 by 8 ft sheets of 3 mm. Hull panels are scarfed, glued and nailed to a tapered pine keelson, the ends are copper wire stitched, and the hull is bent into shape in two directions, a tortured plywood technique. He estimates about 120 hours to build, and the plans show where to place seats to balance her for one rower or two paddlers.
What building a Long Lake actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
