16' 1" Abenaki

Designed by Newfound Woodworks

A 16 ft 1 in tandem canoe designed by Newfound Woodworks, loosely based on old Maine canoes with recurved stems and a slightly flatter bottom for initial stability. About 56 lb in cedar strip, 35.25 in beam, 500 lb capacity and 2 in of rocker. It is a beamy all-rounder in the Prospector mould for lakes and slow rivers with kids, a dog or a week of gear. The prototype was built for the company's Cedar Strip Building DVD in 2004.

Newfound describes it as straightforward strip construction and says many first-time builders have chosen it. Kits include CNC-cut forms grooved for stapleless work. As a rule of thumb, budget 150 to 250 hours. The medians below come from builders who logged this boat here.
