Sande Ace
Designed by Orrin Sande
The Sande Ace is a 13 ft 2 in mahogany plywood outboard runabout built by Orrin and Allan Sande and their father Reuel at the Sande Boat Works on Hood Canal, near Belfair, Washington, between 1956 and 1962. The brothers began with William D. Jackson's published 12 ft Ace and soon stretched it by about a foot, adding more length in the middle so the forward cockpit of the popular two-cockpit version grew. Advance Outboards sold most of them on the Seattle side of Puget Sound, and the boats became a familiar sight on the canal.
The Sandes never published plans of their own. Their boats differed from Jackson's drawings in several documented ways: 3/8 in bottom plywood forward instead of 1/4 in, an aluminum fin in place of the external bottom strips, an aluminum rub rail, lower transoms, and a single transom knee where Jackson called for three, which owners now treat as a weakness. Modern builders produce 13 ft versions by extending the original lines, and an owners' group keeps a registry and an annual rendezvous going.
What building a Sande Ace actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
