Venture
Designed by Steve Killing
The smallest of the five strip kayaks Steve Killing drew for Bear Mountain Boats, the Venture is a 14 ft by 22 in sport kayak for small adults and children up to about 140 pounds. Killing straightened the rocker at the stern so a short boat would still track well when cruising, and gave her a slightly more upright bow and a springier sheer than the larger Resolute and Endeavour, to keep her in proportion and give her a lively feel.
Her beam is narrower than the Endeavour's, but because smaller paddlers sit with a lower centre of gravity Bear Mountain says she feels just as stable. She has the lowest low speed resistance of the range, which suits calm bays and open lakes. The cockpit opening is 31 by 16 in and the expected finished weight is 45 to 50 pounds. Construction follows the canoes: moulds on a strongback, cedar strip hull, then a strip built deck.
What building a Venture actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
