Flat Bottom Jon Boat
Designed by Vintage Projects
A 12 ft flat-bottomed scow-type jon boat, pulled from an old magazine for fishermen who work shallow backwaters and weedy margins of lakes and rivers. The wide flat bottom gives more usable room than a round or V-bottom boat of the same length, and the materials are cheap and easy to find.
The frames, gunwales, deck beams, chine logs, seat stringers and seat back are pine, with solid oak for the runners and chine mouldings. The planking is AB-grade exterior plywood: 3/8 in for the bottom, sides and deck, and 3/4 in for the transom. Nothing about the design is clever, which is the point; it is a straightforward first wooden boat for someone who wants something to fish from. The scanned plans are free to download and use.
What building a Flat Bottom Jon Boat actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
