Sea Skiff 17
Designed by Vintage Projects
This is Happy Clam, a 17 ft inboard sea skiff by the Atkin family, who by the time of the article had drawn more than 65 boats on the same unusual box keel hull form, from this one up to a 305 ft shallow-draft tanker built in wartime. The form gives shallow draft, a low centre of gravity and great stability, and the broad keel tapers to the propeller post, shielding the propeller and keeping the shaft angle nearly level.
She is 16 ft on the waterline, 5 ft 6 in wide and draws 11 1/2 in, with 28 1/2 in of freeboard forward and just under 20 in aft to keep her dry. Clocked over a measured mile on Long Island Sound, she made 14.8 mph on a 5 hp Palmer Baby Husky inboard. The flat keel lets her sit level on a beach or trailer. Plans are free.
What building a Sea Skiff 17 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
