Small Fry
Designed by Ray Klebba
Named after a young salmon, the Small Fry is an 11 ft 6 in by 30 in solo canoe weighing around 30 pounds, meant for creeks, local ponds and backwaters that are hard to reach in a bigger boat. Ray Klebba places her in the tradition of tiny canoes such as the Wee Lassie, and says she borrows a little from that boat and from other small solo designs.
The paddler sits low, below the waterline, which makes her stable enough for drifting and birdwatching despite her size. Klebba also bills her as easy to build, and her short length and generous beam make her one of the more approachable strip canoes for a first project or a small shop. White Salmon Boat Works sells full size plans as well as basic and complete kits, for a cedar strip hull finished in fibreglass and epoxy like the rest of the fleet.
What building a Small Fry actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
