11' 9" Otter
Designed by Hans Friedel
An 11 ft 9 in solo play canoe drawn for Newfound Woodworks by Hans Friedel of Sweden, built in cedar strip with epoxy and fiberglass. About 35 lb with a 32.5 in beam and 340 lb capacity, it can be paddled with a single or a double blade and portages easily. It is deeper than a Wee Lassie, so the seat hangs on cleats bonded to the hull, and there is room for a larger paddler or a dog.
A short, simple open hull suited to a first strip build. Newfound recommends adding a keel to help tracking when lightly loaded. Kits come with CNC-cut forms for stapleless construction. As a rule of thumb, budget 130 to 220 hours. The medians below come from builders who logged this boat here.

Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
