Wherry 14
Designed by John Hartsock
The 14 ft Cosine Wherry was designed by John Hartsock, who built and tested the prototype on lakes, rivers and harbours around Puget Sound and liked it well enough to keep it; White Salmon Boat Works now sells the plans. She is 14 ft long with a beam of 52 in to the outside of the strips, weighs roughly 100 to 125 pounds depending on the figure quoted, and has a design displacement of 500 pounds.
She is a stable, dry boat that responds quickly to the oars and comes into her own with a second rower. The plans allow more than rowing: a small outboard can be fitted, and she can take a drop down centreboard, a retractable rudder and either of two sail rigs. That range makes her a reasonable choice for someone who wants one strip built boat for exercise, fishing and the odd sail on a quiet lake. Plans are sold by contacting Ray Klebba directly.
What building a Wherry 14 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
